Cultural Narrative & Creative Direction
Cultural Narrative & Creative Direction
A story worth telling.A place to experience it.
Based in Los Angeles, R/terior Studio is available for design projects worldwide.
Cultural Narrative Design is R/terior Studio’s specialty, guided by Cultural Intelligence in Design™. We connect heritage and identity with cultural research and a sensory understanding of space, then translate that thinking into a clear creative direction.
R/terior Studio develops cultural narrative design and creative direction for brands, developers and design partnerships. Based in Los Angeles and led by Rydhima Brar, the studio translates heritage, audience and context into a clear spatial point of view.
A meaningful brand space needs more than a logo applied to a wall. It needs a relationship between the story people are told and what they experience through layout, materials, color, objects and movement.
Our work establishes that relationship through brand experience strategy, material and palette direction, partnership concepts and visual identity integration. It can inform retail environments, hospitality concepts and other places where a brand becomes a physical experience.

Where heritage becomes a design direction
Cultural intelligence in interior design means understanding the people, place and lived experiences behind a project, then letting that understanding guide spatial decisions. Our Rooted–Rhythm–Refuge lens connects that context to how an interior is experienced.
| Rooted · Heritage & identity | We explore the people, place, memories and brand history behind the project. Cultural research helps us ask better questions about rituals, symbols, material traditions and social patterns; references remain specific, attributed and developed in dialogue. |
|---|---|
| Rhythm · Sensory experience | We map the intended experience before translating it into form. Proportion, color, light, tactility and spatial sequence help express the narrative, while neuroaesthetic research offers a lens for considering how a space may be perceived. |
| Refuge · Belonging & use | We aim for a story people can encounter and participate in. The design should make room for recognition, discovery and connection, with the meaning grounded in the people and context it represents. |
The CIDER Methodology turns this lens into scoped work: Cultural Decode, Intent & Emotion Mapping, Design Translation, Experiential Layering, and Realization & Refinement. The stages included depend on the engagement; the cultural perspective continues throughout.
Neuroaesthetic interior design considers perception and aesthetic experience as part of design judgment. At R/terior Studio, this complements heritage and cultural research: we consider sensory qualities alongside personal meaning, use and context. Responses vary between people; we explore preferences through conversation rather than prescribe a universal formula.
Translate heritage without turning it into a theme
Cultural references are most useful when they are specific. A ritual, a material tradition, a family memory or the history of a place may offer a stronger starting point than a broad stylistic label.
We explore which references belong to the project and how they can influence contemporary design decisions. The aim is an interpretation that connects with the people and purpose of the space.
Culture can shape how a place feels before anyone explains its story.
What cultural narrative and creative direction can include
The engagement can establish a concept for an existing project team or develop a wider direction for a new environment. We define the deliverables and the level of implementation involvement at the outset.
| Brand experience strategy | The intended audience, brand story and experience that the physical environment should support. |
|---|---|
| Spatial narrative | A concept that connects the place, its people and the decisions that shape the interior. |
| Material and palette direction | Color, texture and material relationships that translate the narrative into an aesthetic language. |
| Partnership concepts | Creative ideas and shared direction for design collaborations and bespoke brand relationships. |
| Visual identity integration | A relationship between the brand’s established identity and the experience of the space. |
One story. Many physical expressions.
A flagship, an installation and a hospitality interior ask different things of a creative concept. A useful narrative can be expressed differently at each scale while maintaining a recognizable point of view.
That continuity comes from clear principles: what the brand stands for, how people should feel, and which material or spatial relationships carry the idea. It leaves room for individual spaces to do their own work.
Connect the concept with the way a space operates
A spatial idea needs to be considered alongside movement, use and the people responsible for delivering it. Early conversations should include the brand team, design partners and those who understand day-to-day operations.
Creative direction establishes a common reference for decisions. Detailed implementation, technical documentation, approvals and construction responsibilities depend on the agreed scope and project team. We discuss these boundaries before the concept is treated as a construction instruction.
If a hospitality property also needs interiors and procurement, that broader scope can be discussed alongside narrative development. If your team already has a designer or architect, a focused creative direction engagement may be the more useful starting point.
A public-facing example: EAST MEETS WEST
Created for the Legends event in West Hollywood, EAST MEETS WEST explores a meeting of influences through a window installation. It offers an example of a spatial narrative expressed through a public-facing design moment.
This is an installation reference, not evidence of operating a complete retail store or delivering a full hotel. Review the work in relation to the scope you are commissioning.
Questions before you begin
How do heritage and neuroaesthetics inform this service?
The CIDER Methodology turns this lens into scoped work: Cultural Decode, Intent & Emotion Mapping, Design Translation, Experiential Layering, and Realization & Refinement. The stages included depend on the engagement; the cultural perspective continues throughout.
Heritage informs the meaning and context of design choices. Neuroaesthetics adds a research lens on perception and aesthetic experience; cultural and social research helps us understand rituals, identity and patterns of use. We apply these perspectives through the brief and the people involved, rather than assume one response or aesthetic fits everyone.
What is cultural narrative design?
Cultural narrative design uses the history, people, rituals and context of a project to inform its spatial concept. At R/terior Studio, that concept becomes a reference for material, palette and experience decisions rather than a theme applied at the end.
How can a flagship retail space reflect our brand heritage?
Begin with the parts of the heritage that matter to your audience today. A spatial brief can translate those ideas through circulation, display, material and atmosphere. The detailed design and operational requirements should be developed with the appointed project team.
Can you help a hospitality brand express its company story?
Yes. Brand experience strategy and creative direction can establish the narrative for a hospitality environment. The inquiry should identify whether you need concept direction only or a broader interior design engagement.
How do you create continuity when a narrative changes between phases?
A documented concept and agreed design principles give each phase a shared reference. When the brief changes, the team should understand which decisions need review and who approves the revised direction.
Is creative direction the same as full-service interior design?
They serve different needs. Creative direction establishes the story and aesthetic framework. A full interior design engagement adds a defined set of planning, selections and delivery responsibilities. The appropriate scope depends on what your team already has and what it needs.
Can this service help an existing space whose pieces feel disconnected?
A focused review can identify where the intended identity and the current environment diverge. We discuss the existing plan, audience and operational priorities before recommending whether the next step is narrative direction, a spatial audit or a broader interior engagement.
What should our brand team bring to the first conversation?
Bring brand guidelines, the story you want to express, audience information, project photos or plans, known constraints, working budget, timing and details of the team. Share the decisions that are already fixed and the ones that remain open.
